Christina Aguilera’s Work For Pittsburgh’s Women’s Center And Shelter
February 23rd, 2012
Singer Christina Aguilera does a lot of work for charity, raising funds for organizations such as Amnesty International and various other human and animal rights charities. One of her favorite organizations to help, however, is one that hits close to home for the music star. Pittsburgh’s Women’s Center and Shelter helps the female victims of domestic violence by giving them a safe place to escape to and helping them start a new life.
In late 2003 the popular singer donated 200,000 to the charity, which at the time was down on its luck. Funding cuts had led to several vital staff members being laid off during the summer of 2003, so the generous donation helped them stabilize their finances and continue their vital work. Aguilera also visited the center while in the area spending time with her mother who is actually a member of the charity’s board.
Christina Aguilera has made no secret of the fact that her father was abusive to both her and her mother while she was growing up. Moving around a lot as a child, she recalls how in each new city her mother would seek out the nearest women’s shelter in case she needed it. Pittsburgh was one of the areas that Aguilera lived when she was younger and her mother still lives there today.
