The Hurt Locker's star Jeremy Renner
Los Angeles (March 8, 2010)- James Cameron may have billions in the bank- thanks to blockbuster Avatar- but it is his ex-wife, Katherine Bigelow, who has this year’s Oscar on her mantle.
Bigelow, who directed the Iraq war instant classic The Hurt Locker, made Oscar history by becoming the first woman ever to win the Best Director Oscar. By the way, the movie also happened to win Best Picture, screenplay, editing, sound mixing and sound editing… a total of six Oscars.
Avatar wasn’t completely shut out, winning for art direction, cinematography and visual effects.

LOS ANGELES (January 31, 2010)- Grammy went Gaga for the Ladies last night!
Beyoncé, Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga owned the night winning a combined dozen Grammys.
· Swift won four Grammys, including top honors for Album of the Year (“Fearless”).
· Beyoncé took home six Grammys, including one for Song of the Year (“Single Ladies [Put a Ring on It]”).
· Lady Gaga won just two Grammys, but enjoyed the night’s signature moment when she shared a breathtaking debut with Elton John. In the duet, the two blended her song "Speechless" with his classic "Your Song." |

Best Supporting Actor Winner Christoph Waltz
Los Angeles (January 23, 2010)- The fantasy feel-good movie of the year… no, not Avitar… Inglorious Basterds took the top honors at the Screen Actors Guild awards- Outstanding Performance by a Cast.
The award adds some fuel to the Oscar speculation that the Quentin Tarantino re-write of Nazi-era history has a legitimate shot at a Best Picture slot. Avatar, which took top honors at last weeks’ Golden Globe’s was pretty much shut out at the SAGs.
Eli Roth, speaking on behalf of "Basterds" ensemble, praised Tarantino for "plucking actors from around the globe, including the Fangoria convention, and giving them a chance to shine."
Fellow cast member Christoph Waltz- who played a decidedly evil Nazi- appears to be a Best Supporting Actor lock for the Oscars after taking the same honor at the SAGs and Golden Globes.
“It’s nice to be an overnight sensation after so many years,” the Austrian actor said. |
 New York- Peyton Manning continued his assault on the National Football League record book, winning an unprecidented fourth MVP award. Manning had been tied with Brett Farve for the old record of three MVPs.
Manning dominated the voting the way he has dominated defenses throughout his career. He received 39 1/2 votes with Drew Brees coming in a distant second with 7 1/2 votes. The other two were Philip Rivers of San Diego (2) and Brett Favre of Minnesota (1).
"I'm very humbled and grateful to be honored with this award and I really feel like it is a reflection of our team," Manning said.
The Colts were 14-0 when the decision was made to bench Manning (and preserve his health) in the second half of the game against the Jets. The Colts finished 14-2 to hold onto homefirled advantage in the playoffs.
"I have to believe that starting 14-0 and having seven comeback wins has a lot to do with this award coming our way, and I'm very grateful to all the players and the coaches and our fans, who were a big part of it. There were a number of other extremely deserving candidates." |
Oslo (October 9, 2009) -In a stunning victory for Barak Obama and a harsh rebuke to his predecessor, Barack Obama has been awarded the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize by the Norwegian Nobel Committee.
According to the committee, the award was given for “his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples. The Committee has attached special importance to Obama's vision of and work for a world without nuclear weapons.”
In his brief tenure, Obama has strengthen ties with Europe, opened up talks in the Middle East and is working to improved relations in Cuba and South America. The prize was clearly given not for any specific accomplishments, but for the hope that a new American “world view” will lead to a better world in the near future.

London (October 6, 2009)- I.M. Pei, one of the most honored architects in history, can add yet another major award to his collection.
The Royal Institute of British Architects has named the 92-year-old Pei as the winner of the 2009 Royal Gold Medal- one of architecture’s highest honors.
Pei was nominated by RIBA honors committee member David Adjaye, who described the architect as a “giant in the canon of greats”.
“I remember as a young student first visiting the Louvre in Paris and marveling at its extraordinary ability to unify and modernize what was a much loved but disparate institution, and beholding its magnificent, gravity defying, glass pyramid,” Adjaye said. “He became a role model for me as a young architect.”
“He is one of the greats of 20th – and 21st – century architecture; a man whose work I have always admired,” added RIBA president Ruth Reed. “A list of his influences and those he has influenced reads like a roll-call of the modern movement. Seldom has such a reward been so overdue or so just.”
Pei’s major projects include the glass pyramid at the Louvre and the John F. Kennedy Library in Boston. |
