Ambassador of Conscience Award (Amnesty International)

The human rights group Amnesty International annually presents the Ambassador of Conscience Award to individuals who have demonstrated outstanding leadership and performed exceptional work for human rights. First awarded in 2003 to Czech Republic president Válec Havel, the award was inspired by Irish poet Seamus Heaney’s poem “From the Republic of Conscience,” which was written for Amnesty International’s Art for Amnesty group. Members of Amnesty International as well as persons belonging to an International Human Rights court, former award recipients, and the UN Secretary General can submit nominations for the award. Previous winners have included anti-Apartheid leader Nelson Mandela and rock musicians and activists U2.
