Since 1942, the Science Talent Search (STS) has been America’s oldest and most prestigious science research competition for high school seniors. The STS was first sponsored by Westinghouse, but Intel took over the competition in 1998.
Each spring, 40 finalists attend the week-long Science Talent Institute in Washington, D.C., where the students present their research projects to the general public and members of the scientific community at the National Academy of Sciences.
The first-place prize is $100,000, wilth all finalists receiving at least $5,000 and a laptop computer. Nearly 70% of finalists go on to earn either a PhD or an MD degree.
