Sakharov Prize

The Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought has been awarded annually since 1988. Granted by the European Parliament and named for noted physicist and Nobel Peace Prize winner Andrei Sakharov, the prize is given to those who embody Sakharov’s values. “In awarding the Sakharov Prize, the European Parliament honours, in particular, outstanding achievements in the fight to protect freedom of thought and expression against intolerance, fanaticism and hatred.”
The award may be granted to groups or individuals. Of note among the recipients is 2003 winner, Kofi Annan, former U.N. Secretary General.
