The process of finding America's Favorite Dancer begins with nationwide auditions. Everyone from the unknowns to the national champions begin the quest for the prize, which varies by season, through auditioning. The successful move on to the weekly rounds of competitions which challenge their ability and versatility.
Host Cat Deeley is joined by judges Nigel Lythgoe and Mary Murphy who determine the early part of the competition. The judges review the dancers who have been invited to call-back week and choose the finalists. These twenty dancers are given a dance style and assigned a partner for their performance. The three couples with the fewest votes from the viewers compete with one another to remain in the competition. Two couples remain while the third is sent home.
Once the competition has narrowed the field to ten finalists, the viewers alone determine who remains. The winners of the competition have been: Nick Lazzarini, Benji Schwimmer, Sabra Johnson and Joshua Allen.
