The Liberty Medal

According to the National Constitution Center, which presents the Liberty Medal, the award goes to “men and women of courage and conviction who have strived to secure the blessings of liberty to people the world over.”
The Liberty Medal was created during the We the People 2000 celebration of the bicentennial of the U.S. Constitution.
The list of Liberty Medal winners is an impressive one with a group of recipients that includes former presidents George H. W. Bush and Bill Clinton as well as Vaclav Havel, Nelson Mandela, Shimon Peres, Kofi Annan, and Sandra Day O’Connor. The Medal has also been awarded to organizations, including CNN International and Doctors Without Borders.  Six former recipients of the Medal have gone on to win the Nobel Peace Prize.
