Daytime Emmys

Entertainment >> Daytime Emmys

More than two decades after the original EMMYs were created, the Daytime EMMY Awards began in 1972. The Daytime EMMYs were handed out as part of the EMMYs ceremonies for the first two years, then, in 1974, were given a show of their own.
Since there are relatively few daytime dramas, there is a great deal of repetition in nominees and winners. Actress Susan Lucci became the poster-woman for perseverance when she won her first EMMY for Best Actress in 1999 following 19 nominations and 19 disappointments.
General Hospital has dominated the Daytime drama awards in recent years, winning eight times since 1995. Guiding Light’s Kim Zimmer has had a remarkable run, winning the first of her five EMMYs in 1985 and her most recent award in 2006.

First-time Winners Darin Brooks and Tamara Braun

August 30 (Los Angeles)- After 22 years of coming up short, “The Bold and the Beautiful” finally claimed its first Emmy as the Best Drama Series at last night’s Daytime Emmy Awards. “The Bold and the Beautiful” which runs just 30 minutes was believed to have no real shot against its hour-long rivals.

Perhaps it shouldn’t have come as such a surprise. Virtually all of the winners at the Daytime Emmys were first-time honorees.
Other first-time winners included Tamara Braun (“Days of Our Lives”) who took best supporting actress honors and her co-star Darin Brooks, who won in the best younger actor category. Still more rookie winners included Vincent Irizarry ("All My Children") who was the co-winner of best supporting actor.
