These prizes, established at the bequest of the Dr. Rolf Shock, honor those in the fields of logic & philosophy, mathematics, music and the visual arts. The winners are chosen every third year and the awards presented by the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and the Royal Swedish Academy of Music for the visual arts and music honorees. Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences presents the awards in mathematics and logic and philosophy. 
Recent winners from the United States include Jaakko Hintikka (2005) Thomas Nagel (2008) for logic and philosophy. Hintikka was honored for his analysis of modal concepts and Nagel for, “his systematic investigation of the tension between subjective and objective perspectives on reality and of how this tension gives rise to fundamental philosophical problems.”

2008 Rolf Schock Prize Winners Announced

The philosopher Thomas Nagel, New York University, NY, USA, the mathematician Endre Szemerédi, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, NJ, USA, the artist Mona Hatoum and the musician Gidon Kremer have been awarded the Rolf Schock Prizes 2008.
