The White House Correspondents Association presents three key awards each year, the Merriman Smith Memorial Award, the Aldo Beckman Award and the Edgar A Poe Memorial Award.
The  Merriman Smith Memorial Award was created to honor those who cover the president. There is both a print and a broadcast award which serve to recognize quality news coverage which was the hallmark of the former reporter’s career.
The Aldo Beckman Award is given for “sustained excellence in White House coverage.”
The Edgar A. Poe Memorial Award honors “excellence in coverage of news of national or regional significance.”
The 2008 Merriman Smith Memorial Awards were given to Deb Riechmann (print) and Ed Henry (broadcast). The 2008 Aldo Beckman was presented to Alexis Simendinger and the Poe honors to Paul Shukovsky, Tracy Johnson, and Daniel Lathrop. 

 

New Yorker, Esquire and Reader's Digest Take Top Honors at National Magazine Awards

NEW YORK, NY (April 30, 2009)— Familiar names topped the honorees at the 44th Annual National Magazine Awards.

Reader’s Digest, Field & Stream, Wired and Texas Monthly took the highest honors for General Excellence at the National Magazine Awards.
 
In the individual categories, Esquire took home awards for Feature Writing, Personal Service and Leisure Writing, while The New Yorker won for Reviews and Criticism, Fiction and Photo Portfolio.
 
Presented by the American Society of Magazine Editors, the National Magazine Awards “honor print and online magazines that consistently demonstrate superior execution of editorial objectives, innovative editorial techniques, journalistic enterprise and imaginative design.”

2009 Payne Awards for Ethics in Journalism went to the Seattle Times and to Glen Mabie

April 9, 2009- The Seattle Times and Glen Mabie are winners of  The 2009 Payne Awards for Ethics in Journalism went to the Seattle Times and to Glen Mabie.

The Seattle Times won the News Organization award for its groundbreaking reporting on the University of Washington’s football program in a four-part series, “Victory and Ruins,” published in January 2008.  Times staff reporters Ken Armstrong and Nick Perry, uncovered a massive cover-up of scandals involving football players who had been arrested in college, some on serious felony counts. According to the Payne Awards judges, the Seattle Times was honored for journalistic integrity.

43rd Annual National Magazine Awards Winners Announced

 

NEW YORK, NY—The American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME) bestowed the industry’s most prestigious editorial honors tonight at the 43rd annual National Magazine Awards.  The black-tie gala at Frederick P. Rose Hall, Home of Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City gathered more than 1,000 editors, publishers, industry professionals and guests to celebrate 25 winners across 20 categories.  Named after the Alexander Calder stabile “Elephant,” the 2008 “Ellies” drew a record-setting 1,964 entries from 333 print and online magazines.
The awards honor print and online magazines that consistently demonstrate superior execution of editorial objectives, innovative editorial techniques, journalistic enterprise, and imaginative design.  Established in 1966, the National Magazine Awards is the preeminent program in the magazine industry to honor editorial excellence. ASME presents the awards program in association with the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. 
The 2008 National Magazine Award winners are: 
·         National Geographic for General Excellence (over 2,000,000 circulation)
·         The New Yorker for General Excellence (1,000,000 to 2,000,000 circulation)
·         GQ for General Excellence (500,000 to 1,000,000 circulation)
·         Backpacker for General Excellence (250,000 to 500,000 circulation)
·         Mother Jones for General Excellence (100,000 to 250,000 circulation)
·         Print for General Excellence (under 100,000 circulation)
