 The World Car of the Year is selected by a panel of 48 journalists from around the world (representing 22 countries). To be considered for the award, cars must be sold in at least five countries and on at least two continents.
 
The awards were officially launched in January 2004.  The awards are intended to complement, not compete, with existing national and regional Car of the Year programs.
 
The awards are not affiliated with any automaker, publication or any other commercial enterprise and are administered by a non-profit association.

 

Volkswagen Golf VI wins the World Car of the Year Award

April 9, 2009- The Volkswagen Golf VI was named the 2009 World Car of the Year by a jury of distinguished automotive journalists from around the world.

The Volkswagen Golf VI beat out 50 other nominees from around the world to take the honor.
According to a press release issued by the World Car of the Year jurors, “The new Golf VI employs Scirocco styled grille and headlights and larger tail lights. However, it also feels more expensive than other family hatches, thanks to its solid build and high quality cabin."
