U2 frontman Bono isn’t only about rock ‘n’ roll. The Irish rocker is also a vocal activist, who has pressured heads of state worldwide to fight poverty in Third World countries. In 2004, he co-founded ONE, a nonpartisan, grassroots advocacy group that fights extreme poverty and curable disease in Africa and other countries by raising public awareness and lobbying political leaders to support programs and policies that improve conditions around the world.

Bono took ONE’s mission corporate in 2006 when he and fellow activist Bobby Shriver founded Product (Red) to raise money to buy drugs for women and children with AIDS in Africa. As part of the program, Bono convinced a number of global brands to sell (Red) products and donate 50 percent of their profits to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculousis and Malaria. Bono serves as a spokesman for the Product (Red) brand, which has raised more than 170 million to fight AIDS in Africa.

As a result of his work for Product (Red) and ONE, Bono received the Legion D’Honneur from the French Government in 2005, was named TIME Magazine’s Person of the Year in 2005 and was knighted in Britain in 2007.

Geoge Clooney is an actor with a heart of compassion. He organized the “Hope for Haiti Now” telethon, spearheading efforts that raised over 58 million for earthquake victims. When Clooney received the Emmy’s humanitarian award for his work, he said, “It’s embarrassing. You don’t want to be awarded for what you’re supposed to be doing.” You’ve got to love Clooney for his humility.

He is an activist and tireless advocate for peace in the Darfur region of the Sudan who has used his celebrity to bring attention to genocide in Darfur. He traveled there with NBC journalist, Ann Curry, discussing his role as a United Nations Messenger of Peace. “Well I come back for the same reason I think you come back. If there is any chance you can shine a light on it, and if you don’t, it’s irresponsible,” he told Curry.

Clooney and his journalist dad, Nick, produced a film about the Chad-Sudan border called “Journey to Darfur.” The 8th world Summit of Nobel Peace Prize Laureates presented Clooney with a Peace Summit award, but Clooney said his Darfur work is his greatest failure, because little has changed since the film. Clooney is humble and handsome–a great combination.

Singer Christina Aguilera does a lot of work for charity, raising funds for organizations such as Amnesty International and various other human and animal rights charities. One of her favorite organizations to help, however, is one that hits close to home for the music star. Pittsburgh’s Women’s Center and Shelter helps the female victims of domestic violence by giving them a safe place to escape to and helping them start a new life.

In late 2003 the popular singer donated 200,000 to the charity, which at the time was down on its luck. Funding cuts had led to several vital staff members being laid off during the summer of 2003, so the generous donation helped them stabilize their finances and continue their vital work. Aguilera also visited the center while in the area spending time with her mother who is actually a member of the charity’s board.

Christina Aguilera has made no secret of the fact that her father was abusive to both her and her mother while she was growing up. Moving around a lot as a child, she recalls how in each new city her mother would seek out the nearest women’s shelter in case she needed it. Pittsburgh was one of the areas that Aguilera lived when she was younger and her mother still lives there today.

Celebrities frequently give money and time in support of various causes and organizations, but their motivations are frequently called into question. As with anything, some people are motivated by selfish reasons for giving to or working for a charity, while others are motivated purely by a desire to do good things.

There are plenty of celebrities who give very little, judging from their yearly income, to help others. These people are likely motivated by such factors as public perception and monetary gain through tax write-offs. Society looks favorably upon people who give money and time to help others, and celebrities are in the business of gaining favor from the public. As for taxes, those celebrities in the highest tax bracket need all the help they can get when it comes to the IRS, and any donations made to tax deductible charities can help tremendously.

However, many celebrities, such as Angelina Jolie and Bono of the band U2, tirelessly give of themselves, both personally and monetarily, in an effort to simply improve the world. While many of their acts are broadcast in the media, a great many more go unnoticed for weeks or months, if they are ever noticed at all. Not all people seek personal gain from helping others, and that is even true of celebrities.

The love of artists and their arts is shared by people from generation to generation. The influence of celebrities has been at the center of topics such as aids awareness, civil rights and various forms of cancer.
Among the most universal connections that people have in the arts, no other is as precious as the love and care spread around the world by celebrities who choose not only to give back to their communities but to feed the world and bring new meaning to charity. Many celebrity backgrounds begin as an ordinary rags to riches story and grows into the life of someone charismatic enough to tackle the toughest political issues of the day and quietly save millions of lives.
The simplest boy meets a girl and together they travel to places that average people, who have the same compassions, never get the chance to go. As average people many of our beloved celebrities feel abandoned, are lonely and suffering from extreme boredom. These highly intelligent, cultured, patriotic individuals have dreams that lead them to learn the world. Through politics, social issues, medical awareness, religion and current events they teach others how to take part in the processes of life.
